Let’s be honest: we were always going to find our way to this specific barstool. Whether it’s the view from the Crow's Nest or the trifecta of tacos, trivia, and tequila that puts you on the hunt for the city's best margaritas, Santa Cruz has a glass for you.

I have dedicated myself to the arduous research, from the perfect brisket-topped tostada at El Palomar to the briny, ocean-adjacent sips near the wharf. The reality is that some people get the chips, and some get the check; these are the spots that know the difference.

Here are the best margaritas in town, ranked.

Best steak fajitas ever
Jose Special is bombbb
Fresh chips, generous servings
Kind, attentive service
Amazing food, head back

I walked into El Palomar and immediately felt like I'd made a good decision. The Jose Special is bombbb, and I mean that in the most technical sense. Fresh chips hit the table before I even asked. The steak fajitas? Best I've had, and I've had a lot. Service was kind, attentive, the kind that refills your water without you making eye contact. Portions are generous, so come hungry or plan to nap after. I left full, happy, and already planning my return. That's the mark of a place that gets it right.

Authentic, flavorful Mexican dishes
Delicious agua de horchata
Attentive, polite service
Great value kids menu
Consistent, sublime food quality

Copal doesn't try to be fancy. It just is good. The dishes are authentic, flavorful, the kind that make you slow down and actually taste things. I ordered the agua de horchata and it was perfect, not too sweet, not too thin. Service was polite and attentive without hovering. The kids menu is a great value, which matters when you're dragging a small human along. Food quality is consistent, which is rarer than you'd think. I've been back twice since. That says more than any review I could write.

Highlights
Free drink refills daily
Tasty self-serve salsa bar
Menudo served every day
Help-yourself chips included

Taquería La Katrina is the kind of place where you don't have to ask for anything. Free drink refills daily, which is dangerous for me. The self-serve salsa bar is tasty, and I appreciate a place that trusts me with a ladle. Menudo is served every day, not just weekends, which is a commitment. Chips are help-yourself, so pace yourself. It's casual, a little chaotic, and exactly what I want when I'm not trying to impress anyone. My margarita was solid, nothing fancy, but the refills kept coming. That's a win in my book.

Highlights
Family-run, friendly service
Homemade tortillas worth stealing
Eggs cooked with real care
Owner caters special events
Weekend brunch worth investigating

Evarista's feels like someone's home, in the best way. Family-run, friendly, the kind of service that remembers your name by the second visit. The homemade tortillas are worth stealing, and I say that as someone who has never stolen anything in my life. Eggs cooked with real care, not just thrown on a griddle. The owner caters special events, which tells you they know what they're doing. Weekend brunch is worth investigating, I did, and I wasn't disappointed. My margarita was simple, but the warmth of the place made it taste better. I left feeling like I'd been fed by family.

Highlights
Oceanfront views, right on beach
Calamari worth the hype
Crab cake Benedict stands out
Service fixes issues gracefully
Brunch variety spans seafood

Crow's Nest has the oceanfront view that makes you forget you're in a restaurant. Right on the beach, so the margarita comes with a side of salt air. The calamari is worth the hype, I don't say that lightly. The crab cake Benedict stands out, even at brunch when everything else is competing for attention. Service fixed a small issue gracefully, no drama, just handled. Brunch variety spans seafood, which is smart for a place this close to the water. My margarita was cold, citrusy, and exactly what I needed while watching the waves. It's a splurge, but some views are worth it.

Top notch bartenders
Favorite local bar
Worth the splurge
Kind, welcoming staff
Drinks worth returning for

Front & Cooper is my favorite local bar, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The bartenders are top notch, the kind who remember your drink and your name. It's worth the splurge, because you're paying for skill, not just alcohol. The staff is kind and welcoming, which is rare in a place that could easily be pretentious. My margarita was balanced, not too sweet, not too sour, just right. I've had drinks there that I still think about weeks later. That's the sign of a place that cares. I'll keep going back, and I'll keep telling people about it.

Tiki atmosphere done right
Sarah H. is a legend
Drinks were absolutely amazing
Server caught missing pumpkin seeds
Staff makes birthdays special

Hula's does tiki atmosphere right, not overdone, just enough to make you feel like you're on vacation. Sarah H. is a legend, and I don't use that word lightly. The drinks were absolutely amazing, and I mean that with full sincerity. My server caught missing pumpkin seeds in my salad and fixed it without me even asking. That's attention to detail. Staff makes birthdays special, which I witnessed firsthand when a table next to me got a surprise. My margarita came with a little umbrella, and I didn't even care that it was cheesy. It was perfect.

Great window table spot
Refreshing suggested ginger drink
Delicious charcuterie board
Free popcorn with truffle dust
Unique mixed-style menu

Vim is a weird little place, and I mean that as a compliment. Great window table spot, perfect for people watching. The suggested ginger drink was refreshing, and I'm not usually a ginger person. The charcuterie board was delicious, the kind you pick at while pretending you're not hungry. Free popcorn with truffle dust, which is dangerous because I couldn't stop. The menu is a unique mixed-style thing, so you never know what you're going to get. My margarita was unexpected, a little different, but it worked. I left confused and happy, which is a good combination.

Delicious house spirits

Venus Spirits knows how to make a cocktail. Top notch, no question. The house spirits are delicious, and you can taste the difference. Huge lunch portions, which I appreciate because I hate leaving hungry. Service was friendly and fast, the kind that doesn't make you wait for anything. Great patio seating, perfect for a sunny day. My margarita was made with their own spirits, and it was smooth, clean, and dangerous. I had one, then another, and then I had to be careful. That's the sign of a good bar. I'll be back.

Highlights
Killer horchata, perfect sweetness
Phenomenal pizza birria
Corn quesadillas stole the show
Service stuck around
Worth a return trip

Corazon De Leon surprised me. The horchata is killer, perfect sweetness, not too heavy. The pizza birria is phenomenal, and I didn't know I needed that combination until I had it. The corn quesadillas stole the show, which is saying something because everything was good. Service stuck around, not in a bad way, just present when I needed them. I'm already planning a return trip, which is the highest compliment I can give. My margarita was solid, but honestly, the food was the star. I'll order the margarita again, but I'll be thinking about those quesadillas.

Lively Friday afternoon vibes
Staff know their beer
Arcade meets margarita escape
Steps from Capitola beach
Live music most afternoons

BrewTopia is a Friday afternoon kind of place. Lively, the kind of energy that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. Staff know their beer, which is good because I don't. Arcade meets margarita escape, and it works. Steps from Capitola beach, so you can stumble from sand to bar. Live music most afternoons, which adds to the chaos. My margarita was fine, not the best, but the vibe made up for it. I played a few games, had a drink, and felt like I'd gotten away with something. That's the point, right?

Award-winning chowder lives here
Right next to the beach
Lidia's service is pure gold
Stuffed salmon from heaven
Freezing days turn welcoming

Ideal Bar & Grill is right next to the beach, which is convenient when you need a drink after a cold walk. The award-winning chowder lives here, and it's worth the hype. Lidia's service is pure gold, the kind that makes you feel like a regular even if you're not. The stuffed salmon is from heaven, and I don't say that about fish often. Freezing days turn welcoming here, which is a special kind of magic. My margarita was simple, but it warmed me up. I left with a full stomach and a lighter heart. That's all I ask for.
