I must confess a great deal of comfort in finding a place that simply is what it is. For decades, Country Way has been a constant in Fremont. The meals are superb, a fact that does not waver. Everything tastes fresh. The flavors are clean and honest. The owners are the kind of people who greet you like an old friend, because they remember you. It is the iconic family restaurant we all hope to find. That familiarity is the point. It is unpretentious and wonderful. I went in looking for a review, and I am afraid I left feeling like a regular.

I confess I was not reviewing this place as a French restaurant at first. SOHO Modern Japanese is its own thing. The Valentine's dining experience was intimate and relaxed. I must confess the tasting menu was a masterpiece of presentation, each plate a small, beautiful scene. The nigiri and the uni were standout bites, so fresh and clean. The service was attentive, making me feel like a welcome guest. I admit I was there for dinner, but the thought of their brunch is a comfort. It is a relaxed place with big flavors. I found the whole evening to be surprisingly thoughtful.

I confess the fusion of cuisines at Massimo's is a risky gambit. But they win their bet. Refined Italian-French cooking? It works here. The sauce execution is truly masterful, a real point of skill that elevates everything it touches. The service is polished and attentive. While the private event space is elegant, I was just as pleased to be seated in the main dining room. A reservation is recommended for good reason. I confess I was there to review the food, but I was most impressed by the sheer professionalism of the entire operation. It is a serious dining room for a serious meal.

I confess I was impressed by the sheer generosity on display at Ristorante IL Porcino. The attention from the service staff was immediate and prompt. The portions are generous, to say the least. I found the outdoor patio to be a pleasant place to enjoy a long meal. They were extremely accommodating with my own peculiar dietary needs, which I always appreciate. This is a good place for a group gathering, as the energy is convivial and the noise level is a low hum. I left feeling full, satisfied, and well looked after. It is a solid, reliable hand on the tiller for a pleasant evening out.

I confess I was surprised by the food at Strizzi's. The clam chowder was absolutely delicious, a real standout. The pasta and the Cajun chicken were both good, too. I ordered the fried zucchini and the Cioppino, which were also good. I will say the sauce is your friend here, as things can get a little dry without it. The bread and salad that came out first were a standout. It is a classic, no-frills neighborhood joint that does its job well. I felt a sense of comfort in that simplicity. I would return for that chowder alone.

The staff was attentive and friendly, making me feel welcome. There was a short wait, but I found it was well worth it. This is a place that takes comfort food seriously. I will be direct. Le Papillon is the real deal. The service is a finely tuned instrument, accurate and attentive from the first moment to the last. The kampachi was exquisite, but the crab soufflé stole my heart. For the main course, the duck and the tenderloin were cooked to perfection and simply melted. For a four-course tasting, the price is more than fair for the generous portions. The desserts were memorable, and they even brought a special plate for the birthday at the table next to me. I confess I was charmed.

I confess I was looking for something specific for a celebration, and Paris Baguette delivered. Their custom celebration cakes are a work of art. I must confess my surprise at the sheer scope of the menu at Le Moose Crepe Cafe. The name promises much. The food delivers in kind. They serve bold Thai fusion flavors that wake you up. Then, of course, there is the extensive crepe menu, a whole other world to explore. The service was excellent, truly attentive without being overbearing. I found the prices to be very reasonable for the quality. There is a welcoming patio out front. I confess I was impressed by the confident execution of two very different culinary styles under one roof. It is a place of pleasant surprises.

I confess that a trip to Los Gatos is always a welcome notion, but the drive that sometimes precedes a meal like this is a quiet, necessary ritual. At Épernay Bistro, the journey was entirely forgotten. I had the beef bourguignon. It was an impeccable preparation, the meat falling apart with a profound tenderness. The service was warm and attentive, never once feeling rushed. The French wine list is exceptional, a perfect complement. Even the salmon tartare was refined. I was welcomed with genuine hospitality. It was a memorable experience. I felt a deep sense of peace at that table, and I confess I was already planning my return before I left.
