I have eaten my way through this town like it was my job, because it kind of is. San Carlos is small, but our pastry game is weirdly serious, and you don’t need to drive to the city for a fix.

We have a French spot doing a matcha strawberry lavender pastry that sounds like a Pinterest fail but absolutely isn't. We also have an air-fried pork bun that beats most sit-down meals I've had on Laurel Street.

The range here goes from a Greek patio where fried olives steal the show to a no-nonsense donut counter that's been owner-run since day one. I ate a concha and a sesame ball in the same afternoon.

No regrets. Here's where to spend your carbs.

Expert Mexican and Asian bakes
Best ingredients, honest bread
Real commercial bakery chops
Delicious pastries, serious craft

I walked into Sweet Production and felt like I’d stumbled into the back room of a real bakery. Not a display case bakery. A working one. The Mexican and Asian bakes sit side by side, and that combo is rarer than you’d think. The bread is honest. No fluff, no sugar coating. Just sturdy loaves that mean business. Pastries are delicious in a way that makes you slow down. You can taste the commercial chops. The ingredients are top shelf. I ate a concha and a sesame ball in one sitting. No regrets. This is craft, not theater. I’ll be back for the bread alone.

Outstanding Basque cheesecake
Top-notch London Fog
Friendly staff, worth returning

Mademoiselle Colette is the kind of place you return to for the service alone. The staff remembers you. That matters. The French pastries are flaky and proper, but the seasonal matcha strawberry lavender thing they do? That’s the reason I keep checking back. The Basque cheesecake is outstanding. Burnt top, creamy middle, zero mess. I also ordered a London Fog and it was the best I’ve had in town. Not too sweet, perfectly steamed. Friendly staff, too. Worth returning, and I did. Twice this week. I’m not ashamed. I’m just full.

Custom cakes yearly favorites
Amazing pastries and coffee
Helpful counter service
Hot cocoa worth ordering
Cookies leave you wanting

Lavender 'n Cream has become my yearly cake spot. Custom cakes that actually taste like something. The counter service is helpful without being pushy, which I appreciate. Pastries and coffee are solid, but the hot cocoa is the sleeper hit. It’s rich, not childish. The cookies? They leave you wanting. One bite and you’re already thinking about the next one. I ordered a custom cake for a birthday and it was a hit. The frosting wasn’t a sugar bomb. It was balanced. I’m not saying I plan my year around this place. But I do.

Killer schnitzel, three ways
Apple strudel worth the hype
Patio seating, clean inside
Fair prices for German fare

Bistro Mitte is technically a restaurant, but the apple strudel is a bakery crime scene. I’m here for that. And the schnitzel. Three ways, killer. The patio seating is nice if you want to watch Laurel Street. Inside is clean, which is more than I can say for some spots. Prices are fair for German fare, not cheap but not robbery. I had the strudel after a big lunch and still finished it. Flaky, warm, not too sweet. The hype is real. I’d come back just for that. And the schnitzel. And maybe the patio.

Highlights
Perfect for big parties
Frosted cakes for every occasion
Easy parking on Laurel
Birthday hit with everyone

Nothing Bundt Cakes is exactly what it sounds like. Bundt cakes, nothing else. That’s fine by me. This is the place for big parties. I ordered one for a birthday and everyone ate it. That’s the test. Frosted cakes for every occasion, and the parking on Laurel is easy. That’s a bigger compliment than it sounds. The cake itself is moist, dense, and the frosting is thick but not cloying. It’s a reliable hit. I’ve had fancier. I’ve had more interesting. But for a crowd-pleaser? This is the one. Quick in, quick out, everyone’s happy.

The Cake Robin Custom Baked Goods

The Cake Robin Custom Baked Goods
Highlights
Custom cakes done perfectly
Tastes as good as looks
Easy, friendly ordering process
Great for big celebrations
You’ll come back again

The Cake Robin is a custom bakery that actually delivers. I gave them a vague idea and a photo, and they made it better. The cake tasted as good as it looked, which is rare. Most places put all the effort into the design and the cake is an afterthought. Not here. The ordering process was easy and friendly. No attitude, no runaround. For big celebrations, this is where I’m going now. I’ve already told three people. You’ll come back again, I think. I know I will. The slice I kept for myself didn’t last the night.

Real Turkish coffee ritual
Carb heaven of sweets
Rice pudding with hazelnuts
Quaint market on Laurel
Perfect Thursday afternoon stop

Grand Bazaar Foods is a quaint market on Laurel, and it’s also a carb heaven. I went in for Turkish coffee and stayed for the sweets. The ritual is real. They pour it proper, with the foam and the grounds settling. The rice pudding with hazelnuts is the move. Creamy, not too sweet, with a nice crunch. It’s a perfect Thursday afternoon stop. I sat by the window and watched people walk by. The market itself is small, but everything is packed in. Sweets everywhere. I walked out with a box of things I didn’t need. Zero shame.

Cheap, not-too-sweet cakes
Savory pork buns shine
Air-fried bread stays amazing
Egg tarts are generous
Custom cakes draw regulars

SimplyCake is my budget-friendly secret. The cakes are cheap and not too sweet, which is a winning combo. But the real stars are the savory pork buns. They’re air-fried, and that bread stays amazing. Crispy outside, soft inside, pork filling that’s actually flavorful. The egg tarts are generous too. Bigger than most, and the custard is rich. I’ve seen regulars come in for custom cakes, and I can see why. They deliver. I ordered a small one for a dinner party and it was a hit. I’m not fancy. I’m just practical. This place gets it.

All-natural, no artificial colors
Smooth, awesome flavor variety
Polite, helpful, attentive service
Unique rotating gelato and sorbetto
Perfectly portioned hazelnut mini cones

Gelataio does gelato right. All-natural, no artificial colors, and you can taste it. The flavors rotate and they’re all smooth. I had the hazelnut mini cones, perfectly portioned, and I felt like a civilized person. The service is polite and attentive without hovering. They let me sample three things before I chose. That’s patience. The sorbetto is unique too, nothing like the standard strawberry. I’m a fan. It’s not a bakery in the traditional sense, but the craft is there. I’ll keep coming back for the rotating flavors. The pistachio stole my heart.

Best donuts ever tasted
Legendary counter service
Owner-run since day one
Great breakfast sandwiches
Quick, friendly, professional

San Carlos Chuck's Donuts might be the best donuts I’ve ever tasted. That’s a big claim, and I stand by it. The owner runs it, has since day one, and you can feel that in the service. Legendary, honestly. Quick, friendly, professional, no nonsense. The donuts themselves are light, not greasy, and the glaze is perfect. They also do breakfast sandwiches, which is dangerous because I now have a reason to go before noon. I had the bacon egg and cheese on a croissant. It was better than some diners. This place is a staple. I’m already planning my next trip.

Fantastic lamb shish kabobs
Delicious Napoleon cake
Great pelmini starter
Cozy wife-and-me spot
Worth a return visit

Nursel Central Asian Cuisine is a wife-and-me spot that feels like a secret. I went for the lamb shish kabobs, which were fantastic. Tender, smoky, spiced just right. But I also had the Napoleon cake for dessert, and that was the real surprise. Layers of flaky pastry and cream, not too heavy. Then I started with the pelmini. Those little dumplings were a great starter. It’s a cozy place, small and personal. The service feels like you’re eating at someone's home. I’ll return. That Napoleon needs a second visit. And a third.

Friendly, efficient table service
Dog-friendly Laurel Street seating

Elia San Carlos has a beautiful blue patio that makes you feel like you’re on vacation. The Greek theme is everywhere, but it’s not cheesy. I ordered the fried olives, and they were crisp and savory. That’s a dish I’ll think about for a while. The beet salad was delicious and gorgeous, all pink and purple. I couldn’t stop looking at it. Service was friendly and efficient, no waiting around. Dogs are welcome on the Laurel Street seating, which is a huge plus. I brought my pup and she got a water bowl. That’s customer care. I came for the patio. I stayed for the olives.
